How to: Organize Your Workspace in a Studio Apartment

In a small apartment, you might not have the luxury of having an entirely separate room to use as a workplace or a study — but that doesn’t mean you can’t carve out a little space for working and creating at home. There are infinite storage options you can take advantage of if you’re willing to think outside the box a little bit:

Find the space

The first step to setting up a home office is to find the most productive space to set up your desk and tools. Make sure that this place has everything you need to work. If you have an unused bedroom, consider using this as a dedicated office. If an entire room isn’t at your disposal, find a quiet corner of the kitchen or living room.

Organize your tools

What “tools” are absolutely crucial to your job? Depending on your profession, it’s likely you’ll have plenty of other resources (like filing cabinets, a printer, etc.) to incorporate into your workspace as well. Staying organized can make the difference between a productive week and a completely wasteful one.

Use your space wisely

  • Invest in space savers: filing cabinets, wall organizers, computer cord organizers.
  • Look out for taller ceilings and storage systems that can perform double duty as an organizational tool and workspace.
  • A wall-mounted console that runs the length of the room serves as both desk and display space and provides a generous work area. A wall-mounted desk boils a desk down to its very essence: a flat work surface. No legs, no drawers, no back, no-nonsense, so you save lots of space.  You can even try designs that fold into the wall when not in use!
  • A demilune or hall table can make a nice small desk or laptop table and doesn't take up too much space. You could place one in your entryway, behind the sofa, or on a blank wall, move a chair up to it when necessary, and have it serve as a console table the rest of the time.
  • The sill of a high window can serve as a desk too!
  • A small desk placed near the bed can be used as a workplace and a nightstand at the same time.
  • Use a Ghost Chair. Its eye-catching translucent plastic frame provides ultramodern style to your workspace and you will save space as well.

Use bookshelves

There’s a reason successful businesses keep bookshelves in their offices. As a work from home employee or entrepreneur, creating a dedicated space to house books and work ledgers is a great way to keep your paperwork organized without cluttering your desk space. Open closets are ready to become your best friends too if you want to clear some space and not hide all your belongings under the bed.

Adjust the light

Natural light has a knack for making any space feel more open and airy, so maximize yours as much as possible. If you want to use partitions to create the illusion of different rooms in your studio, opt for one that lets in plenty of light. Mirrors are almost magical when it comes to their ability to enhance a small studio. It increases the ability to concentrate on work or studies even if it doesn’t actually add any more room. And that’s because the more reflective surfaces you have in your space, the larger it will look.
